Belper Chess Club Enters Crucial End‑of‑Season Run‑In Across All Divisions
Belper Chess Club are heading into the final weeks of the Derby & District Chess League with multiple teams locked in high‑stakes battles at both ends of their respective tables. With promotion, titles and relegation all still in play — and just two points separating many of the key positions — the closing stages promise to be some of the most dramatic in recent memory.
Division 1: Belper A Go Two Points Clear in Title Race
Belper A took a major step in the Division 1 title fight last night with a crucial victory over Derby B, lifting them to 17 points and putting them two points clear at the top.
However, the race is far from over. Their closest rivals, Derby A, still have a game in hand and remain firmly in contention. With 2 points for a win every board result could prove decisive and with three matches to go, Belper A must get results from all their games to keep the pressure on Derby A.
Division 3: Belper D Win to Go Top — But a Showdown Looms
Belper D also claimed a vital win last night, defeating Derby D to move two points clear at the top on 11 points with two games to play.
But Division 3 is incredibly tight. Only two points separate the top four teams, and Rolls Royce E have a game in hand. If they win it, they will draw level with Belper D.
That sets up a blockbuster clash on 9th April, when Belper D travel to Rolls Royce E in what could effectively be a title decider. With promotion on the line and the division so competitive, this fixture is shaping up to be one of the most important of the season.
Division 4: Belper E Two Points Clear and Closing in on the Title
Belper E are in a strong position at the top of Division 4, sitting two points clear with two matches remaining. Their destiny is firmly in their own hands.
However, the run‑in is anything but straightforward. They face two tough opponents — Spondon B and Wirksworth Feathers — both capable of taking points off anyone in the division.
If Belper E can secure even one win, they will be in an excellent position to clinch the title. Two wins would guarantee it.
Division 2: Belper C Fighting for Survival
While several Belper teams are chasing titles, Belper C are locked in a very different battle — a fight to avoid relegation.
They currently sit one point inside the relegation zone, but with two matches to play, survival is still on the cards. Crucially, they are still to face Rolls Royce D, who are above them by just a single point.
With 2 points for a win, victory in that head‑to‑head would lift Belper C out of the drop zone and put safety firmly within reach. Win both remaining matches, and they control their own fate.
Still Everything to Play For
From title pushes to relegation battles, Belper Chess Club enter the final stretch with almost every team involved in meaningful, high‑pressure matches. With the margins for error razor‑thin one thing is certain: the season is far from over.
